Ben Vorlich (Loch Lomond)

Ben Vorlich's Height:943m
Summit Grid Reference:NN 295 124
Translation:Hill of the Bay
Start Point:Car parking between Ardlui and Stuckendroin farm

Ben Vorlich has a height of 943m and is situated north of the Arrochar Alps. Located between Loch Lomond and Loch Sloy, the mountain offers fantastic views on the surrounding area. The mountain has many rocky outcrops and 3 summits. Some basic navigation skills are necessary to climb this mountain. Ben Lomond has such a large topographic prominence that all other mountains around appear to be quite far away. Its ridge runs from south to north with another one running eastwards. Ben Vorlich is one of the most popular mountains in Scotland. The name “Ben Vorlich” can be translated into “Hill of the Bay”.

For climbing the north ridge there is a route starting between Inverarnan and Ardlui. For the south ridge it is possible to start the walk between Inveruglas and Loch Sloy. There is no walk exclusively for Ben Vorlich. Most visitors climb Ben Vorlich by following one the paths to Loch Sloy and then climb up the mountain or follow the path to the “Little Hills” from where Ben Vorlich can be reached.

Ben Vorlich Loch Lomond

A popular approach to climb Ben Vorlich is from the south of Ardlui train station where you can find a car park at the A82 road. Once parked the car, walk a few hundred metres along the A82 back north direction Ardlui Station. Before reaching the station, there is a path on the left side of the road heading first to the “Little Hills” and then to Ben Vorlich. Even though the path can’t be seen clearly in the beginning of the route it becomes more visible after following the burn for a while. The map above shows the car park from where the route starts.

Another approach is from the west of Ben Vorlich near Loch Sloy. This side of the mountain is quite steep and rough to climb. For those who like to combine walking with climbing, this is a good approach. Also for walking only, this path can be interesting but a good physical condition is necessary. All the effort will be rewarded with views from the West side that even reach to the Isle of Mull on a clear day.

Transport

Arrochar has bus connections to Glasgow and the West Highland Railway connects Glasgow with Arrochar and Tarbet. There is also a bus service from Glasgow to Tarbet and Inveruglas. By car just follow the A82 along Loch Lomond’s West Shore until the car Par marked on the map above.
