Ben Venue

Ben Venue's Height:729m
Summit Grid Reference:NN 477 061
Translation:Beacon Hill
Start Point:Ben Venue car park at the A821 West of Loch Achray

With its 729m of height, Ben Venue offers some of the greatest views in the Trossachs. It has two peaks with almost identical heights which are about half a kilometre apart from each other. A part of Ben Venue can be seen from Loch Achray. Low down Ben Venue is the Bealach nam Bo, a little notch where the Highlanders used to drive through their stolen cattle. In the crags above Loch Katrine one can find the Goblin’s Cave. The views from the peaks of the mountain reach from Ben Arthur (The Cobbler) to Ben Ledi and to four lochs that are situated around the mountain. Ben Venue is popular among hill-walkers as well as rock-climbers. It is one of the rockiest hills in the Trossachs.

The Walk

From the main road walk along the Loch Achray Hotel into the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and follow the path along Achray Water. Bear left at the first fork following the track until it crosses, cross over the next junction and follow track when it forks to the right continuing through the forest. Once out of the forest you will head over open hillside, which turns uphill at the 1st of 2 cairns on the way to the summit. On a clear day it is hard to beat Ben Venue as a viewing point, looking back you will still be able to see where you started from as well as The Cobbler, Beinn Bhreac, Ben Lomond, Ben Lui, Ben Ledi, Ben Lawyers and Meall nan Tarmachan, the Arrochar Hills, Dumgoyne and the Campsies as well as Callander. Lochs that can be seen include Loch Arklet, Loch Katrine, Loch Achray and Loch Venacher.

Other Hills and Mountains nearby

If you have left your vehicle at the Loch Achray Hotel or are using the Trundler you will have to return by the same route you came from. However, it is possible to continue walking to eventually come out at Ledard Farm at Kinlochard (5 miles on from the village of Aberfoyle).

There are many more hills and mountains in and around the Trossachs. The smaller neighbour Ben A’an (454m) is just next to Ben Venue and is easy to climb. Even though this hill is not high it offers some impressive views and some climbs. Ben Ledi (867m) which is situated north of Loch Venachar is a more challenging one. The most popular mountain in the area is Ben Lomond which is situated more to the west next to Loch Lomond. This mountain is situated next to the famous West Highland Way and attracts many tourists in the summer.

Getting there

To get to the starting point of Ben Venue follow the A821 either from Kilmahog (by Callander) or from Aberfoyle. However, the road from Aberfoyle is the more interesting one as it goes along the Elizabeth Forest Park and offers some good views to the surrounding area including Ben A'an and Ben Venue. The starting point at the Loch Achray Hotel is on the west shore of Loch Achray.
