Ben Challum

Ben Challum's Height:1025m
Summit Grid Reference:NN 386 322
Translation:Malcom's Hill
Start Point:Car Park at A82 between Tyndrum and Crianlarich

Ben Challum is a 1025m high munro and part of the Glen Lochay Hills. It is located in the North of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and parts of the mountain are covered by an ancient forest. Originally the mountain’s name was written „Beinn Challium“ until it became „Ben Challum“. The name “Ben Challum“ means “Malcolm’s Mountain“. The munro can be clearly seen up from Glen Lochay and from from Strath Fillan. From Crianlarich, the mountain appears like a grassy hill because only a part of Ben Challum can be seen from that viewpoint. Even though Ben Challum is relatively high, it is quite easy to climb the mountain.

The mountain can be climbed best from Kirkton Farm which is situated nearby Tyndrum. From there it is easy to climb up the grassy slopes to the north-east. The walk from the start of Ben Challum’s summit until the top takes about 2.5 hours. In the winter, the same route is an interesting for skiing. Ben Challum is suitable for walking in the winter and summer but is rather uninteresting for rock-climbing.

There are many other munros nearby Ben Challum that are interesting for mountaineering. South to Ben Challum are the Arrochar Alps which have many popular mountains for climbing. East of Ben Challum is Ben More, another interesting munro. The area also offers great fishing possibilities. Further south of Ben Challum is Loch lomond and to the east of Ben Challum Loch Tay. Furthermore, the West Highland Way passes nearby the mountain along Tyndrum village.
